April 23, 2018
Dear Parents and Guardians,
There has been a great deal of media coverage and social media activity concerning the Arizona Educators United #RedforEd initiative. This initiative began with activities geared towards bringing attention to the issue of inadequate funding of public education in Arizona.
Many Yuma educators and community members have lent their voices to this cause. You may have seen groups of staff assembling on public sidewalks near schools before the school day began. These walk-in gatherings have been before school and did not have an impact on the operations of the regular school day.
We want to commend teachers for being professional and respectful, setting a positive example for students on how to peacefully bring attention to the impact of the school funding issues in Arizona.
On April 19, 2018, organizers for the Arizona Educators United announced that we should expect to see a walk-out beginning on Thursday April 26, 2018. By April 24, at the end of business day, we will notify you in the event DVA is impacted.
Should a teacher walk-out occur on Thursday, April 26th, DVA will make every effort to avoid school closure. However, to ensure the safety of our students it may be necessary to shut down all school operations. We ask that you consider an alternative plan for your child in the event that our school is forced to close.
If we are unable to hold school, we will use all modes of communication to alert families to the closures including our parent alert system, DVA website http://dva.dvsk12.com and DVA Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DesertViewYuma. Please also take this time to contact the school office to update any necessary changes to your contact information.
Please visit http://dva.dvsk12.com to review some frequently asked questions regarding this movement and the possible impact to your child.
It is our hope that teaching and learning continue through May 24th as planned. Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate this unique situation.
